Dear Netter,
Pac Man will not work on my 512 x 384 8 bit color 12" Apple Color Monitor. If
you could write a plugin to shrink the size of the board and characters maybe
it wouldn't give me the error of only working on a 640 x 480 monitor. Anyone
who writes the program for people of that size or larger is leaving out a
group of people who bought the 12" color for the very purpose that it is the
smallest and cheapest Apple Color monitor available (next to the Color
Classic). Please e-mail me directly if a hack has been made to reduce the
screen size of Pac-Man. Thank you.

I beg to differ. Remember A/UX? An Apple flavor of Unix that allows the
MacOS to interact and take advantage of the Unix operating system..
(I just set-up two Quadra's with A/UX within the last month, along with AS
Pro)
It is obvious from the movie, that the title of the window where the "nerd"
is working in -- when he is typing -- is called "CommandShell".
"CommandShell" is the program in A/UX where a user can type unix commands
and interact with the unix operating system at a text level.
The other monitors and windows that appear on them -- are part of the SGI
Unix system (machines responsible for some of the fantastic computer
graphics in the movie.)
Just my $0.02 worth. Anyone watch the credits to figure out who/what did
the major computer animation and graphics in the movie?!

Seems you are one of those Americans who think that only those

Subject: Accelerating An SE Yet again.. :) (Q)
Info-Macers,
No, no please, let me beat a dead horse. But first, hereUs what I
have:
Macintosh SE, running System 7.1, 4 megs of ram, 20 meg HD,and a Superdrive.
I have been following the discussion in info-mac about accelerating old SE's
and one of the comments that caught my eye was to get the MacWorld (I believe
it was) from June 1993 and read an article which was about accelerators. Well,
unfortunately by the time I got around to reading that particular info-mac,
the
June 93 MacWorld was not in stores anymore.
I have an older MacWorld (June 1992), which rate some of the
accelerators
which were out in 1992, and that article has been very enlightening about the
possibilities of accelerating my mac. However, how fast is fast? All I really
have to reference "faster" by is my Mac SE speeds, and I am beginning to think
anything would be faster. Also, what "level" of an upgrade would be required
before I could gain the use of Quicktime? Or, is that not possible even with
an
accelerator?
I am wondering from people who have made the leap to upgrade their Mac
(SE
preferably). What have they thought about the Accelerator they have bought,
what kind was it, what kind of cost? Are there any options to buy accelerators
though the Higher Education Individual Purchase Program?
I am thinking of the upgrade is not just a "patch" to hold me over for
a
while, but something that will make my Mac last for quite some time to come.
Thanks,

Further to a recent request for information along the following lines:
**********************************
The Scenario:
Our department consists of 60 - 70 members of staff all with Mac access
to 3 or 4 LaserWriters (it varies), two of which are spooled. Some of
us are using System 7 and others are using System 6 (usually 6.0.7).
Until everyone moves to S7, we have standardised on version 5.2 of the
LW software. For various reasons, we (as individuals) wish to be able
to change the LW we use several times a day.
The Question:
Is there a way to by-pass the long-winded apple menu/chooser dialogue
process on both S6 and S7?
**********************************
I had two responses (thank you Richard Lim and Larry Hanser)
suggesting that I use the freeware product, DTPrinter, which
I obtained from umich. It more or less solves the problem under
System 7. It allows one to create icons (one for each printer),
which can be used for changing the printer quite quickly.
We still had some problems because quite a few of us are still
using MacWrite II and this wouldn't allow us to change the
printer without quitting the application. I contacted the
author of DTP (Leonard Rosenthol), who responded on the same
day (!!). He informed me that if the application wasn't
written for System 7, one only needs to hold down the Option
key before doubleclicking on the DTP icon to avoid having
to quit the application first.
This doesn't solve the problem for those who are using System 6,
but I think that everyone will be upgraded (if that is the
right word :-)) to System 7 in a few months.
Thanks.

Subject: ADB as a third serial port
We have a old Mac Plus computer that we use for acquiring data from
a machine in real time. We would like for this computer to print a hard
copy of the data (via a Imagewriter) as the data is being generated. Also,
this computer needs to be hooked up to the network so that the data can be
retrieved from another terminal. The problem is that we need three serial
ports for this. I know there is a product available that allows one serial
port to switch among three different serial devices. But I was wonder if
there is a simpler solution that doesn't involve manual switching. Perhaps
that is a product available that allows a serial device to work throught
the ADB port. If anyone knows of such a beast, please let me e-mail me.
Thanks in advance.

Using Resedit, open DCOD resources. Then open DCOD ID-15005 (the second

OK, time to 'fess up: It's been a while since I've used Speed Disk,
really, for nowadays I use DiskExpress II for defragging. However,
if memory serves me correctly, Maynard is correct in his assessment
if one presses the `Optimize' button; OTH, if one sets SD to Expert,
and uses the `Check Media' under the [Options] menu, then I believe
that SD will properly zero out bad spots on a floppy. Of course, I
could be all wrong <grin>
My personal advice: If you have a floppy with bad sectors, toss it
out (they make for nice coasters :-) For me, anyway, floppies are
cheaper than losing any data.

Subject: Connecting Macs to a Unix/PC net (Q)
Here's a question for the "network gurus":
We shall soon install a new computer system, probably an NCR
system 3000, running Unix, and most terminals will be "diskless
PC workstations" so that anyone can use MS-DOS software stored
centrally, but all are forced to save to a central disk unit
to ensure proper back-up.
This is not a problem with the DOS side, but: what is available
for the two (soon three) Macintoshes? What possibilities exist
to let them also use the storage capacity which will be available?
I think it won't be possible to make them start-up remotely, but
if we could force them to use the central disk space (so that
the Mac's hard drive would only hold the System files and the
applications), this would be great. Until now, the Macs are
only connected with a PhoneNet line, and they can use System 7's
File Sharing capabilities to transfer data from one Mac to the
other.
Oh, I forgot to mention: It's a Mac IIci with 16 mB RAM, and a
MacPortable (my machine) with 9mB RAM. The new will probably be
a Centris for something alike.
Please email me, and I'll summarize.
Thank you and best regards, Christian

charge it further, btw) but it won't run w/o the power cord. I tried
to "fool" it by putting it to sleep and taking out the cord but it
still doesn't work. I tried another battery, same deal.
Today, I brought it to the computer store to be fixed. A couple of
hours ago, the guy calls back and says that some part of my logic board
is dead and I will need to lay down about $750. Is this right???
I know you folks are the Mac experts, so I have to know: why did this
happen? Did I do something? Does it really cost this much? If I
don't fix it and use it off of the cord (until I "find" $750) will
I hurt anything?? I bought this used (it's of course, only now out of
warranty) -- did the guy who sold it to me know that this was going
to happen???
Please. Somebody. Take a moment and whip off an email to me.

don't know about (3). I am also interested in a summary of the answers you
get. If you post them to Info-Mac. I'll see them.
The video I was sent was pretty impressive. They show how you can make
drawings that will be easier to edit later on. However, there may be a
steep learning curve with all the different types of links that are
possible. Another possible advantage is the availability for Windows. The
feature sets are supposed to be identical.

Try adding somthing like this :
put <mystring> & return into fld <thisfield>
This will put he Return at the end of the string.
The & is the cat function. This is just off the top of my head so your

Personally, I don't find Word 5.1 uncomfortably slow on a Mac II/LC.
Slow it is, but not much slower than other software.
>My conclusion (just to stick with the thread): Buy what you want to
>buy, but examine Microsoft's products and the competition carefully.
I regard this as a fair paraphrasing of my conclusions. I think the notion
of boycotting Microsoft because they allegedly don't know how to write some
decent software is pure wishful thinking. Notice how much whining follows
every time someone points out a flaw or shortcoming in some MS product - as
though the competition is a model of bug-free elegance! And when someone
claims that _unreleased_ MS stuff is flawed, people immediately jump onto
the claim as proof of their own preconceptions, no matter how tenuous the
evidence.
On the other hand, I do think there are "ideological" reasons for some
discrimination against Microsoft in favour of smaller, less domineering
enterprises. But if Microsoft do come up with something which is clearly
better than the competition, they ought to be given due credit and (maybe)
custom. My own position is that the MS app has to be A LOT better than
its competitors for me to buy it

Subject: MicroSoft products
Few of Microsofts products are optimized for any specific system. Their
compilers can generate P-code (an intermediate compiler translation
syntax popular in older compilers) which is then executed using a P-code
interpreter written native for each host. This is much slower than
using a native compiler, but theoretically much more portable and also
allows Microsoft to use development platforms other than the Mac.
The big 3 Microsoft apps use P-code rather than being compiled native
for the Mac. I think that the PC versions also use P-code, but since
they are using their own compilers, they should be able to use their
native x86 code-generators instead. This is also a source of bugs since
they have a heck of a time tracking Apple's changes to the Mac Toolbox.
For ResEdit fans (and I am not one), open your favorite Microsoft app
and look for a PCOD resource. Large, isn't it.

Subject: Microsoft software virtues
Can't resist joining in the fray on Microsoft software. The only Microsoft
program I've used on the Mac is Word, so my comments are based on that
program.
What are the virtues of Word? I keep hearing people trash Microsoft
software as being slow, buggy, and hard to use, but I can't figure it. Word
has gotten consistenly more powerful and easier to use with each upgrade,
and it STILL runs briskly on my Classic II. (Some people would consider
that a low-end machine.)
I have two other word processors: WriteNow 3.0 and MacWrite Pro 1.0v2. It's
true that WriteNow is faster in some respects, and it's an aesthetically
pleasing program that makes writing fun, and my kids love it. But it's
missing some crucial features that I need for my work, so I keep coming
back to Word.
In one VERY important respect, typing speed, Word easily keeps pace with
WriteNow. I type about 60-70 wpm, and I can feel a typing drag on many MANY
programs on the Mac: feel it in my fingers, feel myself typing harder to
try to make the letters show up faster. I have never had this feeling with
either of these programs. As long as MS keeps that briskness at text entry,
I can forgive it some slowness at features that I use less often.
I have, by the way, created documents in Word that were a couple of hundred
pages long and consisted entirely of tables spanning five or six pages
each, with NO apparent decrease in typing speed. I've also created
documents from several-megabyte RTF files downloaded from the mainframe,
and ditto. Scrolling speed DOES slow down in this situation but is not
unacceptable, even in page-layout mode. (Did I mention that these documents
were created on an SE?) In any case the outline view makes it possible to
skip around a long document easily.
And with respect to speed in general, Word runs circles around MacWrite
Pro. That typing drag I just mentioned is immediately apparent in MacWrite
Pro. Saving a 90-page document can take well over a minute -- even when
doing an incremental save. And if you want to tie the program in knots,
just try a liberal application of "Keep with Next Paragraph" and "Keep
Lines Together" commands in a long document. Claris's own recommendations
for improving MacWrite Pro performance include NOT using these features
(along with, as your next option, buying a faster computer). I have great
confidence that MacWrite Pro will eventually evolve into a worthy
competitor to Word, but as beautiful and graceful as it is, it's not there
yet.
And with respect to bugginess... I realize my system is kind of humdrum;
System 7.1 with only three or four extensions. But Word is one of the few
programs I own that has NEVER crashed on me. I have NEVER lost data from
Word. I have NEVER had a corrupted document in Word. (No, that's not true;
I had a corrupted document once when I switched to System 7 before my
hard-disk driver was compatible. But it wasn't Word's fault.)
So yeah, I hate the company as much as anyone else, but leave their
software out of it, OK? It's useful, it's well-designed, and it works.

> These are all compact General MIDI (GM) modules, with audio inputs.
> Has anyone used one of these? Suggestions/Recommendations?
In the matter of General MIDI sound modules, there is no better
judge than your own ears. This is especially true if you want to
buy one for multi-media presentations, and not as a pro-musician
looking for specific advanced features/sounds. Visit your local
music shop and listen to the sounds each of the modules have to
offer and then make up your mind about the one you should splurge
on. Having said that, some gossip.... ;-)
The Roland Sound Canvas modules are fairly popular (and highly
rated). Haven't heard the SC-33, but it is supposed to be
basically a repackaged SC-55 (which has good sounds) with much the
same voices, but a different interface. You should be able to
knock down the $ 695 SRP into the $500 range. Try 1-(800) MAC-BEAT
for decent prices on Roland gear.
Haven't heard any of the other sound modules you list (the TG-100
is actually a "tone generator"). Also, if the E-Mu Sound Engine
sounds anything like the E-Mu Proteus series, it should be *quite*
good.
You should probably consider posting your query on the Usenet
discussion group rec.music.makers.synth - I have always received
excellent feedback from that forum about MIDI hardware.

You can also add Ballade and General MIDI Sequencer to your list
of entry level sequencing programs.
MusicShop features the usual Opcode tape-deck style sequencer and
a 32 stave notation editor- $ 150 list Opcode Systems, (415) 856-
3333. (This info is from Opcode propaganda material. Opcode
produces good MIDI software, but most of their packages have an
annoying copy-protection scheme; I just don't like my software
to be copy-protected. Don't know if MusicShop is copy-protected.)
Metro (which is not really an "entry level" package) can edit an
almost unlimited number of tracks in real time. It hasn't changed
much from Beyond - the most major change being an integration to
DECK, a digital audio recording system. (OSC also sells DECK for
$ 249). Supports OMS and over 500 MIDI channels [$225 list. OSC:
(800) 343-3325]. There used to be a demo of Beyond at Sumex. If
you can't find it there, look for it at <Wuarchive.Wustl.Edu> in
mirrors2/info-mac/Old/demo/ (You could also write to
jeremy_sagan@fourd.com . As the author of Beyond/Metro, I am sure
he will be happy to provide more specific info :-)
Trax is an easy to use sequencer for beginners with a tape-deck
type interface. Shares most of the "power" features (and the
interface) with Master Tracks Pro, its senior and more powerful
sibling. One of the few sequencers perfectly happy running on a
Mac Plus. $99 list. Passport Designs, (415) 726- 0280.
Ballade is a 16 track sequencer with built-in support for some
sound modules such as the Roland SC-xx and Yamaha TG-xx [list $ 99
Dynaware USA Inc. (800) 445-3962 ]. I haven't played with this one
either (2 months ago when I checked it was vaporware); but if the
propaganda material is to be believed, it should prove to be an
excellent package in terms of price/value, and user-interface.
General MIDI Sequencer (Altech Systems, street price < $50) has a
"GenMap" module mapping the instrument-list for a number of
synths/sound modules to General MIDI patch numbers. It is also the
least expensive sequencer package in the commercial MIDI line-up.
Some of its features compare very well with the standard features
found in more expensive packages. Over all, it feels a little
"kludgy" (like it was written in Basic). For its price and
features, it may give the other "entry level" packages a run for
their money.
Hope this helps.

Dear Fellow 'Netters:
Awhile back I posted a question regarding the compatability of the
NEC MultiSync 4D monitor with the built-in video of the Centris 610.
As it turns out the monitor works quite well, except that only
640x480 pixels are available (it's a 16" monitor)! I discovered
that through a bit of telephone magic, one could request
a new adapter or software ("DPI-On-The-Fly" I think it's called)
>From NEC that enables one to achieve a higher resolution (832x624).
Well, I ordered said adapter and 6 weeks (!) later I have finally
received the beast and am now basking in the glory of MORE PIXELS!
Hoooray!
But...
I have encountered an interesting problem on which I hope someone
will be able to shed some light. Whenever I am in 256 grayscale or
color mode I have some interesting lines flickering on my screen when
I scroll in a document (noticed whilst I was using Word 5.1).
Strangely, these lines disappear when I switch to any other setting
(1-bit (B&W), 4-bit (16 colors) or 16-bit (Thousands of colors),
etc... ), and scroll. Note that the lines primarily surround the window
that is being scrolled; however, they are not constrained to its borders
and do extend out into the "desktop void" a bit. But they do NOT run
across the entire screen.
Am I losing my mind? Has anybody else seen this? Do I have a
defective piece of hardware (whatever piece it may be)?
Thanks for helping a "hardware ignorant" fella out!

TT fonts and (?) ATM. We've had a couple of problems when trying to print out
old documents on the new systems, as well as printing new documents.
(1) Canvas 3.0.3 graphics print out OK, but Helvitica text is 'squooshed'. The
fix: set kerning to 'loosen 2' for every occurance. Obviously, a PITA!
(2) MS Word 5.1a Helvetica is not WYSIWYG: looks fine on the screen, but is
improperly spaced (kerning again?) on paper, esp. underlining does not match
text (line too short).
In (1), the printer driver is the same as always: LaserJet III v1.1 for a LJ3

and the new uses LW 7.1, on a IIg. I could try using the old LW driver, but my

speed grayscale etc...?
I haven't seen any publication yet mentioning the 145b other than the
advertisements in local newspapers.
Thanks.
Sincerely,

Subject: Power Supply trouble on a IIci.
Okay, I need help. I've had my IIci for three full years now. I have long
had the odd "trickle-down" problem that some others have described. (For
those who haven't seen talk of this problem before...If I turn my Mac off
for long enough, usually a few hours, it will refuse to turn back on. I
must turn off the power strip that I have my Mac plugged into for two or
three minutes, and when I turn it back on my Mac comes to life as though
nothing were wrong.) Someone once posted a hardware fix (involving some
soldering and other stuff) which I failed to go through with (because I'm
lazy.)
Now my IIci won't turn on at all. I have actually had bouts with this
once before. It wouldn't turn on for a few days. I sent it back to the
place I bought it from (Mac Friends, now seemingly out of business) to get
it fixed. When they got it the thing powered right up. Ever since it's
been the same minor problem, having to cut the power for a couple of
minutes. Now it's been two weeks. The local Apple dealer wants some
ludicrous amount of money to fix it, and I'd rather see if someone has any
wise ideas on how to figure out just what's wrong here. Can anyone tell me
how I can figure out whether I'm still having some trickle down problem? Or
maybe the power from my outlets is questionable? Or did my power supply die
completely? How much would a new or refurbished IIci power supply be, and
how hard would it be to install myself?
Feel free to reply to the net if you have some general wisdom about this,
but I suppose it would be quicker and more effective to send replies right
to me.

Subject: Printing to a PostScript file without the LaserPrep in System 7
Hi Everyone,
In System 6.0.x, it is possible to print to a PostScript file without the
LaserPrep by using Command-F. Does anyone know if one can do the same
under System 7.x? That is, can I print to a PostScript file without all
the junk between %%BeginProcSet and %%EndProcSet? The reason for doing
this is because some users here would like to upload/email Mac PostScript
files to a Unix box for printing and I am looking into a way to minimize
the transmission time by not sending the LaserPrep Prologue. At the moment,
under System 7.1 with LaserWriter 7.1.2 driver, a Word 5.1a document
with a single line "This is a test" results in a 342K PostScript file.
I know I can use ResEdit to mess around with the LaserWriter driver to
eliminate the printing of all the Prologue lines, but this still requires
users to switch drivers under Chooser. I wonder if there are some neat tricks
within System 7.x itself that can suppress the generation of the LaserPrep
Prologue. Any advice is welcome and thanks in advance.
Andy

Subject: Publication-quality graph programs (Q)
I'm looking for a program that will output publication quality scientific
graphs, most of
which will be X-Y scatter type. As a microbiologist I need the standard range
of point
symbols (ie. filled/open circles, squares, triangles, diamonds etc.), multiple
error bars,
scalable axes with the ability to use sub/superscript text in labels and
legends. Regression and
curve fitting are desirable tools, in fact the more the merrier.
I would like to be able to use/import data straight from my Excel 3 sheets
(don't knock it,
it works for me!) with the minimum of manipulation (I've got a lot of data).
I've seen various stuff in action (mostly CricketGraph) but have little hands
on experience.
I pulled a SerePlot demo from a ftp site, this looks to be the kind of thing I
want, but I'd like
to be sure that I'm making an informed decision.
I'll be running it on a Classic II with a coprocessor, I need output to be
printable on a
StyleWriter and/or LaserWriter.
All suggestions, opinions and comments will be gratefully received. Posting
directly to me
is preferred as I can't read the digest as often as I'd like.

Subject: QuickMail 2.5 (mis)configuration problems
The powers-that-be over here recently decided that communicating via
QuickMail is a Great Idea and ordered that this be implemented. Our campus
has an administrative AppleTalk network consisting of about 30 machines on
two zones, joined by a Shiva NetBridge and connected to the Internet via
a Shiva FastPath. Our assigned MailCenter is located on another zone,
operated by the regional Vicechancellor's staff, which is on the same Ethernet
and also connected to it via a Shiva FastPath.
Mail operations, incoming and outgoing, seem to operate correctly but
QuickConference refuses to locate users on other zones. All our school
system ATalk zones are visible (on the Chooser, as well as on QuickMail's
zone menus). I've fiddled with timeouts, to no avail. Other internetworking
applications work just fine (such as TN3270, et. al.).
I've attempted plugging my Mac on the same zone as the MailCenter, and
QuickConference works ok there, rapidly locating other logged-in users.
What gives ? Where do I begin to look ? Any and all tips and assistance
will be greatly appreciated.

Subject: SE/30 screen adjustment (Q)
Could someone please direct me how to adjust the SE/30 screen?
Not only has the screen shrunk over time, it has always been a
little cockeyed (the rectangular sides have never been perfectly
horizontal / vertical). I know there are some "knobs/switches"
inside which can adjust the alignment of the active screen area.
(1) Where exactly are they located and what do they look like?
(2) Will the same "knobs" take care of both the (size and
horizontal/vertical alignment) problems?
I am fairly comfortable opening up the case (2 memory upgrades and
a HD upgrade), so discharging the CRT and delving in the innards
of the SE/30 should not be a problem. Thanks!

Subject: SE on Ethernet -- Unimplemented Trap problems (Q)
We recently attached a number of Mac SE's to Ethernet using
Asante adapters. Now the SE's are crashing at random times
with "Unimplemented Trap" errors, even at times when no MacTCP
applications are running.
The SE's are running System 7.0 with the system 7 tuneup
installed. We're using MacTCP 1.1 on these systems. Also, they
don't have any non-standard extensions or control panels
installed. We removed all of those.
I've searched back through the Macintosh news archives and
found several reports of similar problems related to SE's,
Ethernet, and System 7.0 ... but I couldn't find any
solutions.
If anyone knows of a solution to this problem, we would
appreciate hearing about it. Thanks. :-)

Ideally, EasyView should separate and use each item as a section, using the
contents of each Title: line for the index.
So far, I've gotten EasyView to separate by items using a "Simple" view format
and using a text processor to insert a string of '-----' before each '['.
Is there a way to get EV to read the file and process it, without having to
patch it beforehand ? Also, indexing by title string would be nice.
Thanks in advance.

Try VersaTerm or VersaTerm-PRO. They both come with MacTCP and lots of

In the painting mode in most paint/draw apps, bitmaps are created. When
rotated at angles other than 45, 90, etc., the single dots don't really
know where to go. Use the drawing mode, even though it is more difficult
to use, and the rotations will be ok.
I use Illustrator 3.2 for tessellations and find it to be fairly simple to
create quite complex tessellations. Art majors can even achieve a fair
measure of success with Illustrator. Canvas 3.0.6 is also fairly easy to
use as long as the painting tools are not needed.

Subject: Word 5.1a: problem with styles
Hi,
I've got a problem with formatting by using styles in Word 5.1a (italian
version).
I've created a stationery document with about 30 customized styles, all
based on Normal, header, footer styles. I've created a new document using
the stationery and then I apply styles while I'm writing new lines.
All the customized styles are not particulary "exotic": bold, bold with
italic,
new margins, spaces after paragraphs, etc.
When I apply a style on a paragraph in the middle of the document everything
is OK. When I apply a style on the LAST paragraph of the document two things
happen:
1) The Mac beeps
2) A window appears saying "FORMATTING TOO COMPLEX" (translated from italian)
3) The style is applied on the paragrah anyway.
The problem is perfectly reproducible on that document (created by the
stationery) but not on a new document (created by command-N).
The Manual hasn't a "Troubleshooting" chapter nor a "Error list" chapter
and I wasn't able to find any explanations about my problem on the
"Formatting by using styles" chapter.
Of course, it is only an annoying problem: I could fix it by typing a
paragraph mark at the end of the document and writing above it.
Anyway I'm very interested in finding the bug (if there is one!)
Please reply directly to me and I will summarize later.
Thanks in advance,
Federico
